Why don't you come along to one of our practices and see us for yourself? Our practices run throughout the school terms on Monday Evenings, from 6:30 to 8:45pm, at Wakefield House, 65 Acre Avenue, Morphett Vale.
The roots of this choir were laid in 1968 when the community was beginning to expand and, under the baton of Mr. Don Jolly, the choir, then known as the “Southern Singers” came into prominence.
In 1971 the group took part in the Festival of Choirs for the first time and continued performing until 1975 when it was reformed under the name “The Southern Choral Group”.
In 1976, when Noarlunga was granted its City status, the choir became known as “The Noarlunga City Choir”. It has continued performing since then under various conductors, including the well renowned Timothy Sexton.
The organisation changed its name to the “Onkaparinga City Choral Society Inc.” in 2003, and began to explore other activities in which members could participate. This resulted in the establishment of the “OCCS Theatre Group” which has evolved to become “OCCS Good Companions”.
This group provides tailor-made shows during the working week at community centres, nursing homes, retirement villages, RSL, etc. It is now a travelling group of experienced and versatile performers with an extensive and varied repertoire of song and drama.
Over the years the choir has explored many types of music and different styles of singing. We have performed in other languages and sung at various official celebrations, commemorations, concerts and shows. “The Southern Singers” is now our registered name.
We have participated in “Adelaide Sings” for several years. This is an annual event organised by the Australian National Choral Association (ANCA) to showcase the skills of Adelaide choirs.
In addition, the choir regularly sings in Community Carols events in the Southern Area and has done so for a number of years.
